Telepathic Technology  2013

Too often people consider the evolving relationship between humans and technology leading us away from what makes us human. We imagine technology of the future not elevating us past but leading us back to our natural environment, allowing us to experience the world in a way we have never seen it before. The essence of these experiences will be able to be captured and sent wirelessly through devices that connect with our minds.

This multi-disciplinary studio uses scenarios, vignettes (Filmic portrait which demonstrates, offers the viewer an essence, atmosphere, possible experience instigated by a designed system) to explore meaningful or emergent social behaviors, exchanges, emotional experiences and living spaces based upon sensing technologies that can interact, influence or redirect our senses to provide value (and) improve how we value our lives/living. Rarely have designers anticipated the full implications of new technologies on the larger culture, the lives of individuals, or the built environment. From the automobile and television to mobile phones and gene sequencers, initial functional intent represents only a small part of the total impact of new technology. In the interest of increasing the potential relevance and impact of new technological capabilities, this project will explore and map territories of linked social, cultural, psychological behavior. The objective of the investigation is to play, reveal, tweak, challenge, interrogate, interpret, abuse, and test the limits of our senses and our adaptive responses to the influence of new technologies.

We went to the Samsung Research and Development Department in Seoul, South Korea, to furthur develop our initial ideas and concepts by discussing and meeting with Samsung designers and engineers. After this, we came back to Providence, divided into four groups (which are power and control, telepathic technology, ownership, and shaping reality), finished our progress(sketching, storyboard, filming, editing). We ended it up with an exihibition at Samsung, Seoul at the December of 2013.

Technology of the future will extend our senses beyond conventional means, prompting a re-examination of the relationship between humans and nature.

Timeline

Timeline

This is the head device for telepathy, using the EEG technology. With this device, we could experience nature by the way that we haven’t tried before. By physical contact with trees, we could be “online” on their information net, get the environment information. This future device can also connect two persons’ minds when they are both wearing the device. It can transfer and convey present experience, thought, ideas, or memories.

How can technology augment and sensationalize reality? What if we could transfer and share experiences with one another? How can technology lead us back to nature? Nature is trying very hard to make us succeed, but nature does not depend on us. We are not the only experiment.

Since the essential of this exhibition is to show the process of how we got here. We decided to establish the tables, show the inspirations, diagrams, keywords, concepts, and scenarios together. Each group owns a small table and a screen to play vinette in the middle of the large table. We choose images, photos and sketches carefully to show each step of the process, arrange from outside to inside as the developments of the concepts, meanwhile connect related keywords on the large table.
