Up and Down 2010
Someone told you that, when you press a button at the end of the Earth, one person will die at the other side of the Earth. It is the button in front of you, and you can not see the person. Will you easily press the button? You maybe think that this is ridiculous. How could it be happened? However, the development of technology has far surpassed the general knowledge of ordinary people. The technology will gradually change to the main concern subject of human beings, and even we have changed to the fans of “technology”. People would be excited and thrilling whenever a new technology is availble and making our lives more convenient. However, there is one thing that aroused my thought. When I was having a meal with a long-lost best friend, she bowed and kept playing her smart phone to update her information to her on-line blog through the whole process. It was not a good feeling that the beauty of the outdoor restaurant cannot cause any of her attention, and on the opposite, I also seem can only take half of her attention.
Does on earth the new technology provide services for us, or are we controlled by the technology? This project is trying to cause people to think about the questions by the form of theater of the absurd. The play is made a bold adaptation based on “the dumb waiter”. In term of form, I design a large interactive stage device. Every actor can control a unit that he/she plays in (there also have mutual controls between different units sometimes). Every unit will move and change according to the controls of actors. Moving and changes of units will change the plots development (for the position change of units cannot be set in advance, it will make the uncertain changes and moves totally according to the site operation of the actors in the stage). Therefore, every performance will be different and unpredictable.

This is a story that spans over 100 years which about buttons have changed how we understand our world, and how we think. The simplest motion is just push the button and we are in a transition to surface. Buttons don not need form borders, shape, contour, words, ornamentation, and yet, we comtribute to them ease, process, magic, control, play, simplicity, automation. | Details of the stage | Affinity diagramAnalysis of button's functions, characteristics, etc. |
